Spies Among Us: From the American Revolution to 1830s New York

Join us for a look back at spies and spying in NYC from the American Revolution to the 1820s and 1830s. Discover Another New York. Everyone loves secrets… This brand new program offers visitors a glimpse into the spying and spying techniques of ordinary citizens, from George Washington's Culper Spies in the Revolutionary War to the War of 1812, and early 19th-century social reform movements like temperance and abolition, which set the stage for spies of the Civil War. Learn how these people defied convention for a cause; you may even leave wondering if you could have been (or could still be?) a spy. This will be followed by a tour of the Mount Vernon Hotel, where, from 1826 to 1833, guests might have gossiped about spies of their day—or been spies themselves—while pursuing leisure activities in the tranquil countryside of Manhattan, 5 miles north of their busy lives and homes south of 14th street.
