Discover Another New York… Help us celebrate New York history and the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Mount Vernon Hotel by immersing yourself in the past with this museum tour and historically-inspired wine tasting. Our new exhibition, The Empire City Begins, will be just one highlight of this tour about the rise of New York City thanks largely to the opening of the Erie Canal. Opened in October 1825, the Erie Canal brought technological and economic changes that made day hotels, like the Mount Vernon Hotel, flourish. On the gentle current of the canal, boats loaded with goods traveled at 4 miles per hour making the journey between the Midwest and the East faster than ever before. Learn about the canal and its impact on this tour, view our new exhibition, then step into the Tavern for the latest in our series of historically-inspired wine tastings. The tasting will be led by our WSET-certified docent and will feature a selection of four to five contemporary New York wines that are inspired by what would have been served at the Mount Vernon Hotel; light refreshments will be served (must be 21).
