Free things to do in NYC at night

The whole museum, walk-in, with the terraces over the Hudson open after dark. The longest free evening in the city.

Free Friday evening entry to the exhibitions and the historic library. Reservations open one week ahead and go quickly.

Free for New York State residents with an advance reservation. Check MoMA's site for which Friday evenings are open — listings have described it both as every Friday and as the first Friday of the month.

The Frick's free evenings are on the first Friday of the month: October 2, November 6 and December 4, 2026, then February to May 2027 (there are none in January or September). Registration is encouraged but walk-ups are welcome. Ages 10 and up.

The newly rebuilt museum stays open late on Fridays. Admission is pay what you can at any time.

The best free night view in New York. The ferry runs all night, and the downtown skyline and the lit-up Statue of Liberty are right there. Stay on the right-hand side going out.

The Manhattan skyline across the East River, with the Brooklyn Bridge overhead. Walk the bridge back into Manhattan afterwards.

Sunset over New Jersey from Little Island, then the Hudson River Park piers, open until 1am. No tickets needed. From November Little Island closes at 9pm.

The two memorial pools are lit in the evening and much quieter than during the day.

Lincoln Center's atrium hosts free performances every week — music, dance and spoken word — with no tickets; seats are first come, first served.

Volunteer astronomers set up telescopes in public and let anyone look. September sessions are on the High Line on the 22nd and 29th, at Lincoln Center on the 23rd and at Inwood on the 26th, and NYC Parks lists another High Line night on October 20. Clear skies required.

The open-air food market is free to enter, and the season's last night is October 31.

For three minutes before midnight, dozens of the billboards in Times Square switch to the same piece of digital art. The artist changes every month.

From late October the park's rink is free to skate if you bring your own skates, and it is open into the evening.
