New Year's Eve in NYC 2026: the ball drop, fireworks and free options
Times Square is free but means ten hours in a pen with no bathroom. The fireworks in Prospect Park and Central Park are free too, and much easier. Here is what each option actually involves, and what to do on New Year's Day.

Times Square ball drop
The ball drop is free and needs no ticket; space is first come, first served. The Times Square Alliance's rules below are from the 2025 celebration, and the 2026 details are usually confirmed in December.
How it works
Thu, Dec 31, 2026 · Viewing areas opened at 3pm in 2025 · Free
Viewing areas open in the afternoon (3pm in 2025) and fill well before evening. You can only enter from Sixth or Eighth Avenue, through checkpoints on cross streets such as 45th, 49th, 52nd and 56th. The ball is raised at about 6pm and starts its descent at 11:59pm.
Once you are in a pen you cannot move between blocks, and if you leave — for a meal or a bathroom — you cannot get back to your spot.
What you cannot bring, and what is not there
Backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, folding chairs, blankets, large coolers, alcohol and drones are banned. There are no portable toilets and no food vendors inside the viewing areas. Dress in layers: you will be standing still outdoors for many hours, often below freezing.

Prospect Park fireworks
Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn · Free · 2026 details not yet announced
Brooklyn's New Year's Eve fireworks are a tradition of more than four decades. In 2025 there was live music at Grand Army Plaza from 10pm and fireworks at midnight, free with an RSVP on the Prospect Park Alliance site. The 2026 program had not been announced. The best views are from Grand Army Plaza and the west side of the park along Prospect Park West. 2/3 to Grand Army Plaza.
NYRR Midnight Run and Central Park fireworks

New York Road Runners' four-mile race starts as fireworks go off over Central Park at midnight. Registration runs up to about $74 depending on the option, and the race counts toward the 9+1 program for guaranteed 2027 Marathon entry. Runners get a wristband for one guest to spectate in the park, and there is a party at the NYRR RUN CENTER from 6 to 10pm.
Free and cheap ways to spend the night
If you want to see midnight outdoors without the Times Square commitment, the Prospect Park fireworks are the best free option. The Staten Island Ferry runs all night and is free, and the harbor views are good even if you are not near a fireworks barge. Many neighborhood bars and venues run free-entry nights; they are added to the live calendar as they are announced.
Transit runs all night. Stations near Times Square are packed around midnight, so plan to walk a few blocks to a station outside the area on the way home.
New Year's Day
Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge
Coney Island Boardwalk · Fri, Jan 1, 2027 · Free to watch
Thousands of people run into the Atlantic on New Year's Day. For the 2026 plunge the boardwalk party started at 10am and the plunge ran from 11am to 1pm; the organizers raise money for Coney Island nonprofits including the New York Aquarium and the Coney Island History Project. Registration for the 2027 plunge had not opened. Watching is free. D/F/N/Q to Coney Island–Stillwell Ave.
What is closed
Many museums close on New Year's Day, including the Brooklyn Museum and the Bronx Museum. Parks, the ferry and the Bryant Park rink are the reliable options; check before heading to a museum.
